Avon Pension Fund, the £6.3bn Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) serving Bristol, Bath, and the wider Avon region, has appointed Matt Betts as group manager of funding, investment and risk.
Betts (pictured) joins Avon from Brunel Pension Partnership, where was a manager of equity portfolios.
Having been with Brunel from its launch until it was culled by the government following its Fit for the Future consultation in May last year, Betts brings some solid experience of investment pooling, investment portfolio construction and responsible investment to Avon.
This background will no doubt be useful as Avon Pension Fund transitions to its new pool, Local Pensions Partnership Investments (LPPI), by the set April 2026 deadline, and the challenges and opportunities this will bring along the way.
In his new role, Betts will oversee the fund’s investment strategy, finance and funding functions, and will be a member of the senior management team.
He succeeds Liz Woodyard, who retired in September after more than 20 years of service to the Avon Pension Fund.
Betts said: “The opportunity to help shape the fund’s long‑term investment strategy, particularly as it moves to a new pooling arrangement, was a major draw for me.”
