The Society of Pension Consultants (SPC) has named pensions lawyer Duncan Buchanan as its next president.

Buchanan, a partner at Hogan Lovells, will take up the post on 1 June replacing Roger Mattingly who has occupied the role since 1 June 2012.

He has more than 20 years’ experience working in the pensions sector and has sat on the SPC Council for the past eight years having previously chaired the legislation sub-committee.

In his new role Buchanan will seek to ensure that the SPC supports the government to ensure that these, and other, significant changes are implemented in a practical way.

He said: “The pace of change within the pensions industry in the UK is quite remarkable. The need to develop a workable successor to defined benefit continues to drive innovation and auto-enrolment introduces more and more people to a workplace pension on a daily basis. Moreover, the changes announced by the Chancellor in the 2014 Budget have given an unprecedented level of choice to those at the point of retirement and the repercussions of this are still being felt, and will continue to impact the industry, long after their implementation in April 2015.

“Finally on behalf of all SPC members, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to outgoing president Roger Mattingly who has worked very hard in this role over the last two years. His contribution during such a challenging time for pensions cannot be underestimated and his steady hand at the helm of the SPC has ensured that the society has remained at the heart of the pensions debate during his tenure.”
